Orthognathic Surgery

Some patients may have a discrepancy or disharmony of their jawbones. Orthognathic surgery is needed when the teeth do not seem to fit with jaws and/or when jaws do not meet correctly. Corrective jaw surgery repositions the misaligned jaws. This procedure ensures that the teeth meet correctly and function properly. It also improves facial appearance.

Who needs It?

People with jaws that are positioned incorrectly or with an improper bite can benefit from orthognathic surgery. Jaw growth is a harmonious process. In some cases, the upper and lower jaws grow at different rates. When this occurs there can be many problems that can affect appearance, speech, chewing function, and oral health in the long-term. Birth defects and injury to the jaw can affect jaw alignment. Orthodontics can correct bite problems only when teeth are involved. Orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws need to be repositioned.

Common Problems

The following problems can be resolved with orthognathic surgery:

-Open bite
-Breathing problems
-Protruding jaw
-TMJ pain or chronic jaw pain
-Speech problems
-Difficulty in swallowing, chewing, or biting

These conditions may be acquired after birth as a result of trauma to the face, environmental influences, or as a result of hereditary influences.

A consultation will be held along with a complete examination including comprehensive facial x-rays. The patient should feel free to ask any questions they have regarding their treatment during the consultation. Dr. Shabtaie will work closely with your general dentist and orthodontist if you are a candidate for corrective jaw surgery.
